What Will You Retire To? [PART 1] Three Stages to Transitioning Into Retirement
How to Create a Retirement with Purpose and Fulfillment
If I were to ask you to tell me something about yourself, say if we just met at a cocktail party, or a networking event, do you know what you would say?
Of course you do. You might say, I’m a Dr. Lawyer, Police Officer, Artist, accountant… 2 out of 3 of you would include your career in your opening statement.
If you’re retired, you might say, “I’m a retired carpenter, or teacher.”
What if I were to ask you the same question– except this time, don’t include anything about your career? Do you know what you would say then? You might struggle with that.
The question was, “tell me something about yourself, not your career.” What’s your personality, your character, reason for being, your why, who are you really without your career.
• When you retire, you are leaving huge part of you behind—your identity.
• Big part of your identity is your career.
• Who are you without your career?
• What drives you?
• Where do you get your passion, purpose and fulfillment from?
We identify with our careers. And rightly so; we spend most of lives building our professions.
They become much of who we are. Your work provides a great deal of purpose and fulfillment.
